Sheffield Silver – Egg Coddler w/ Eagle Finial – Breakfast at Downton Abbey
$195.00
It is unusual to find an English Breakfast Egg Coddler, Boiler, Steamer that is complete! Often the internal frame for holding four eggs and the spirit burner are missing. This fine Sheffield Silver example is complete and has a desirable Eagle on Nest finial.
This is a usable piece for all who enjoy eggs for breakfast and perfect for anyone who runs a Bed & Breakfast!
This fine example measures 9.25″ to the top of the Eagle finial and 4.25″ in diameter. There is a single hallmark on the bottom which can not be deciphered.
“The egg coddler is a vessel used to boil or coddle one or more eggs. It has a cylindrical or oval shape with a dome. The receptacle contains a frame or wire rings holding the eggs while being cooked. The insert has a loop that allows for lifting the eggs from the water. They are usually accompanied by a stand holding a spirit lamp.”
“Using an egg boiler, coddler or steamer, eggs can be prepared at the table and served hot and fresh to diners. A frame within the vessel held the egg under the boiling water, and the cover prevented hot steam from escaping and assists with the cooking process.”
