These large Star Island albumen photographs are by the 19th-century photographer L.V. Newell, of L.V. Newell & Co, Portsmouth, N.H. They are an exciting find. The most historically revealing is the 5th photograph.
Research discloses that Newell began his work as a photographer in Concord, New Hampshire in 1856. Six months later he moved to Portsmouth. He was one of 13 children of a prominent farmer. Newell is mentioned in his role as an event photographer, in an 1893 publication of the Grand Army of the Republic (Portsmouth Chapter).
